What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?

read time: ~3 min

Don't worry, it won't get you 'high'

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a non-psychoactive natural component found in the hemp plant. It’s one of many powerful cannabinoids, and is known for supporting the body and mind in multiple ways. Because it is not intoxicating, many people utilize CBD as part of their health routine in order to support their inner well-being.

Many Benefits

You're probably wondering: how exactly will CBD benefit me? Among the many positive effects that our users experience, some of the prominent ones are: a sense of focus & feeling of calmness; relief from life's pressures & stress; aid in recovery from exercise-induced inflammation; and promoting balanced sleep cycles.

The Entourage Effect

There are many cannabinoids residing in the hemp plant, as well as other compounds and nutrients like terpenes and flavonoids. We delved into the research of the proposed synergistic effects that these compounds have when bundled together, and that's why we thoughtfully tailored our products with more than just CBD. Below, are some of the key ingredients found in our products working in conjunction to bring out the best in you:

Consciously-crafted CBD

The plants where our extracted CBD come from are grown indoors in beautiful Oregon. We believe that meticulous, modern methods result in reliably rich CBD that our users can constantly count on.

The Caryophyllenes

Beta-Caryophyellene has gained the attention of scientists when it was discovered to be one of the first non-cannabinoids to directly activate cannabinoid receptors. Each of our CBD oil tinctures include a generous amount, as well as a splash of its brother: Humulene.

Terpenes, THC, & Phytocannabinoids

Understanding that CBD works best in the body in conjunction with other key compounds, we offer both full-spectrum 0.3% THC and broad-spectrum THC-FREE formulas that are rich in terpenes, flavanoids, and other beneficial compounds.

CBD: A Brief Timeline

Isolation of CBD & THC

The structures and stereochemistry of CBD and THC were elucidated in Raphael Mechoulam's laboratory. This moment in time may be considered the birth-point of the current movement we see today

The first cannabinoid receptor

Allyn Howlett and William Devane's research leads to the discovery of the first cannabinoid receptor in the brain of a rat, leading to their discovery in the human brain – ultimately named CB1 receptors. It was concluded that these receptors are more plentiful than any other neurotransmitter in the brain

Endocannabinoids Discovered

Scientists Raphael Mechoulam, William Devane, Dr. Lumir Hanus and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) discover anandamide, a naturally occurring endogenous cannabinoid found in the human body. It has been found that such an endocannabinoid binds to the same receptors as THC and is named after the Sanskrit word for bliss. Anandamide plays a role in memory, pain, depression, and appetite. Later in 1995, Raphael Mechoulam and colleagues again find a new endocannabinoid named 2-AG (2-arachidonoylglycerol) that attaches to both CB1 & CB2 receptors

Charlotte Figi's Story

After consuming a high-strain CBD oil, a little girl with a rare form of chronic epilepsy cuts her seizures from 300 per week to 2-3 a month. This milestone roused attention on the other potential benefits that CBD and other phytocannabinoids may have

Paradigm Shift

Propelled by Charlotte's story and proper education, the stigma towards CBD and cannabis in America has dramatically changed. Those who previously opposed these compounds now turn to CBD for its positive effects, and its therapeutic properties are helping to change the lives of thousands of people around the country

Your Endocannabinoid System

read time: ~2 min

An Ancient Balance

Homeostatis is the ability for a system to remain stable and functioning, and the ECS is essential when it comes to our body's equilibrium. The endocannabinoid system evolved almost 600 million years ago and is shared among most members of the animal kingdom, including mammals, birds, amphibian, fish, and even sea urchin! The core components of the ECS are cannabinoids and the receptors that they bind to.

  • Immune health
  • Digestive system
  • Liver function
  • Fertility
  • Muscle formation
  • Learning & memory
  • Stress & mood
  • Appetite & metabolism
  • Inflammatory response
  • Arterial & respiratory health
  • Bone health
  • Sleep & circadian rhythm
  • Motor control

Your Messengers

Cannabinoids ('CBND') can be thought of as the 'messengers' of the endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoids are made by your body (endo means 'from within') where-as phytocannabinoids come from plants (phyto means 'plant').

The two key endocannabinoids circulating in your body are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol while some of the phytocannabinoids extracted from plants include; CBD, CBG, CBN, and the famous THC.

Your Receptors

Cannabinoid receptors are located all over your body, eager and willing to communicate with your cells any distress that life might throw your way (hey, it happens). In other words, these receptors are constantly monitoring your body to help you maintain homeostasis. Scientists have identified two primary cannabinoid receptors, called the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors are critical for a stable, healthy brain and are one of the most common receptors in the entire nervous system. They can be regulators of your memory, mood, motor function, or perception of pain, depending on which area of the brain they are located in.

CB2 receptors are mostly found on the cells situated in the immune system. These receptors are responsible for alleviating symptoms of an overactive immune system, and thus are essential in the emergence and moderation of inflammation.

CBD to the Rescue

CBD works with CB1 and CB2 receptors located throughout the body to produce a myriad of positive outcomes. CBD does not bind directly to either of these receptors but instead impacts them indirectly. These indirect actions include activating TRPV1 Receptors that work to control important functions like pain perception, body temperature, and inflammation. CBD can also increase the amount of anandamide in the body. Known as the “bliss molecule,” anandamide plays a role in the neural generation of pleasure and motivation.

"Bliss Molecule"

Anandamide levels were higher for people who exercised than for those who remained sedentary, and could account for the "runner's high" that some athletes get.

The more, the merrier

The non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid in hemp – Cannabidiol (CBD) – represents only one of over 80 different phytocannabinoids now being widely studied for the many health benefits they can provide.
